Gourley has published on insurgency occurring in such places as Iraq, in Nature and elsewhere, and his work is reviewed to some extent here, Ted video here.
IMO: Assange's studies in Wikileaks should be of value to similar work, some of which could be open source. Such work could be of importance in the Afghanistan situation.
